In the year 2001, The Gnostic
Centre set up its own pre-school for 2-4 year olds, based on the Integral
Education philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, encompassing the
education of the mental, vital, physical and psychic capacities of the
child. Beginning with 12
children and 2 teachers,
today L'avenir has over
50 children and 6 teachers.

Learning Environment
L’avenir offers a space to young
children that combines the warmth of growing up in an atmosphere of love
with the joy of discovering oneself and all that is around... the colours,
the sounds, the numbers, the words, the ants, the grass, the emotions, the
movements, the silence... It offers them a time to dream and a time to make
these dreams come true.
L’avenir is based on the
educational philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother: ‘Education to be
complete must have five principal aspects relating to the five principal
activities of the human being: the physical, the vital, the mental, the
psychic and the spiritual.’
Curriculum & Pedagogy
The children engage in a many
activities to strengthen and develop their bodies and physical capacities -
balance, stamina, strength, agility, aiming, gross and fine motor control,
grace, rhythm, coordination, etc.
Emphasis is laid on refinement of
senses and character through exposure to beauty in the physical, beauty of
senses, beauty of feelings and emotions, beauty of thoughts. The children
are encouraged to come in touch with their innate sense of goodness and
inner discipline rather than become dependent on and circumscribed by outer
discipline.
Mental education comprises of
training the powers of concentration, observation, imagination, reasoning,
judgment, memory and discrimination, as well as providing a grounding in
basic concepts of shape, colour, size, weight, numbers, alphabets, etc.
Importance is given to
inculcating an ecological sensitivity and waste management. Children are also encouraged to
enjoy silence and activities that help them retain and nurture their
inherent contact with inner worlds and subtler realities.
Evaluation & Interaction with
Parents
Detailed records are maintained
of the children's progress (physical, vital, mental) and shared with the
parents as reports twice a year. Parent-teacher meetings also provide an
opportunity to further the child's progress in conjunction. Parenting
workshops by the Gnostic Centre are held to facilitate a deeper
understanding of the Integral approach in parents.
Teachers
All the above cannot be achieved
without a committed and sensitive team of teachers, for whom being with
children is an enjoyable experience through which they too progress. We are
fortunate to have such a team at L'avenir.
